About this Opportunity
Looking to get out of the house? Wanting to help a worthwhile organization? Volunteering in the museum gift shop is a perfect and easy opportunity to do both.
This volunteer opportunity is straight-forward and fairly easy, but it makes a world of difference for the small museum staff. We are looking for a few long-term volunteers to help at the front desk for the Roanoke History/O. Winston Link Museums.
We have visitors not just from across the country, but across the world so volunteers get to hear about visitors' interesting connections to the Roanoke area and to Link. Volunteers also get to watch the trains along the tracks outside the museum. Some days there are only a few visitors so volunteers are welcome to bring a book with them for while it is slow. When we do have visitors and shoppers, hearing stories from the guests and many times answering their questions with recommendations about things to do or places to eat in the area make the volunteer's shift go by so fast.
The primary tasks of volunteers would be to interact with visitors through the sale of admissions and gift shop merchandise and assist museum staff with some museum operations. Only minimal training is needed and will be provided. The gift shop volunteers are a vital part of the organization and make it possible for the very small staff to be able to focus on the operation of the museum and the conservation of Roanoke's heritage.
Our current needs are for Tuesday Mornings (10am to 1pm), Tuesday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm), Thursday Mornings (10am to 1pm), Thursday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm), and Friday Afternoons (1pm to 4:30pm).
We are not able to accept volunteers needing to fulfill court required community service hours.
